Personally, I can't help but admire these people in many respects. All the same ...

So sharia law comes first, eh? this is the nmber one reason why even 'nice Muslims' should never be allowed into any Western country.

"Personally, I can't help but admire these people in many respects. All the same"

The second guy, OK, but what's to admire about the others? And I'm the suicidal one?

Al, I think you need to hear the dry tone in that comment.

I was serious. I admire their devotion. I liked the first couple, too. But they can't live here. Just to be perfectly clear, I do not hold all Muslims to be monsters, not even the zealous and fanatical ones. Peter Kreeft is right: there is much to admire about them. And I don't want anything to do with people who hate them. It's just that what is wrong about Islam is so radically wrong that it destroys everything in its path, most tragically its own adherents.

I can't really find it in my heart to _like_ somebody who makes jokes about taking a second wife. For example.

But I will say this: I do not agree with the statement that someone who deliberately blows up innocent people is not a monster. Somebody who actually does that or who deliberately brings it about (perhaps from a distance as part of the plot) is a moral monster. Somebody who seriously considers it and/or approves of it in the abstract is flirting with moral monstrousness, and one can only hope that such a person's internal brake mechanism will stop him before actually doing it.

As for hatred, well, I hope and believe that I don't hate Peter Singer, either. But his ideas are as monstrous as any I know of, and if he acts on them, he is acting as a moral monster. The same is true of terrorists.

That's understandable. Maybe I've got a blind spot there. :-)

When I say "a monster", I am thinking of one with very little humanity left, one who has destroyed his own humanity. Like the commenters at Wonkette. The deed of terrorism is monstrous, of course, but it is very possible and even likely that some goodness - some moral goodness, however disfigured - remains in the terrorist. So I'm not willing to objectively categorize even terrorists as monsters, except in a rhetorical sense in the heat of battle, when the monster is all that one sees.

Are you saying that you think commentators at Wonkette are monsters but the 9/11 terrorists weren't? Or am I just missing something?

I confess that at a gut level, I think the Wonkettes are more likely to be monsters than the Mohammedans. Sunny optimist that I am, however, I doubt there are many in either camp. My remark was (mostly) tongue-in-cheek.

The truth I'd like to communicate is this: it isn't necessary to de-humanize any group in order to acknowledge that its worldview is a threat, often leading to monstrous behavior, and that action must be taken against its influence.
